Rutgers has the distinction of being one of the nation's leaders in recycling for higher education institutions. Rutgers University Housing and Residence Life, in conjunction with the University Facilities and Purchasing Departments, are committed in promoting recycling, waste stream reduction, reuse and other environmentally friendly initiatives. As you may already know, recycling helps protect our environment, preserves natural resources, saves energy, and allows for opportunities of material reuse.

As required by the State of New Jersey and Middlesex County's recycling program, our program includes:

  1. An operational system that effectively handles mandated recyclables from inside our facilities to external bulk collection areas for proper transport and reuse.
  2. User friendly color labeled containers for the storage or collection of recyclables, inside and/or outside of residential buildings.
  3. Continuous monitoring of the containers to ensure that recyclable and non-recyclable waste is properly separated, not mixed.
  4. Information sharing through available literature, staff and student training programs, posters, and the website

In our residential halls and apartments, we must separate waste into the three categories:

  1. Paper
  2. Glass, Plastic, Aluminum and Steel containers
  3. Trash

University Housing also regularly recycles other materials including: batteries, leaves, fluorescent bulbs, ballasts and wood.

On renovation and construction projects managed by University Housing, included is the recycling of: asphalt, concrete, ceiling tiles, carpet, appliances and scrap metal.

In addition, Rutgers University Housing and Residence Life participates in the annual Recyclemania campaign. RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities.

We appreciate the participation of all students/residents and staff in ensuring that our recycling program is successful and that we comply with the appropriate laws.
